Our family is very proud of the morals and values taught to us by Mel and Dee Driskell. They were a God fearing, compassionate, and giving couple that left a lasting impression on everyone they met. Melndee Helping Hands Foundation was founded by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to make a positive change in the lives of those in need, as Mel and Dee strove to do all their lives. Our community has many deserving people who just need a helping hand. That is where we come in. We will strive to make a positive difference in the lives of as many as possible. And in turn, we hope this encourages others to do the same. Change is made one person at a time. The idea behind our foundation is to share the love that this couple had for life and for sharing. Mel and Dee would save their recyclables to earn money to help kids from their local church go to camp in the summer. Mel would then load his van down with the children from church and drive them to camp for the week. They never passed on a chance to help someone. Both Mel and Dee were hard-working people with high moral standards. Mel passed away of cancer in 1992. Only a year later, their daughter, Linda fell victim to breast cancer. And on the same day of Linda’s death, but exactly three years later, Dee lost her granddaughter, Shelley suddenly. In 2010, Dee had to endure losing a great granddaughter as well. Her husband, daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter greeted her in heaven in 2012. Through all the pain and loss, Dee held her head high, and thanked God for the blessings he granted her.
Melvin and DeElva Driskell (known to their friends and family as Mel and Dee) began their lives together in 1945. They met in 1940. After going on one date, Mel enlisted in the Army. After serving four years, he returned and he and Dee became husband and wife. They had their first Daughter, Gayla, in 1946. Their second, Linda, was born just a year later in 1947. Their third daughter, Theresa, was born in 1954. And to follow that up, they had one more daughter, Robin, born in 1958. From those four daughters, Mel and Dee have a total of nine grandchildren. Those nine grandchildren have brought an additional 19 great grandchildren into this world.
